Welcome to our 2019 Members-only Preorder Plant Sale!  This is our biggest selection yet full of old favorites and new selections alike. We've a new site to make shopping even easier than before. The numbers available are limited, but, if we sell out of anything, make sure to check back as we may have been able to procure more plants.  Many of these plants are favorites of ours. We hope you enjoy the selection!

Sharing with Nonmembers

Feel free to share the plant sale with nonmember friends, but they must become members to place an order. Please share the public plant list with them. Nonmembers may become a member to participate in this plant sale and in our many other programs. New and newly renewed members will receive a link via e-mail to place their online order.

Payment and Pickup

Payment is due at the time of ordering. Sales will end on Monday, October 14 at 9:00 am. Plants will be available for pick-up on:

  • Thursday, October 17 - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Friday, October 18 - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Saturday, October 19 - 8:00 am to 9:00 am – by request only (pickups not available later due to the NARGS Lecture and NC State Fair traffic)
  • No shipping is available.

Please make arrangements to pick up your plants on our regular pickup days and times. If necessary, alternate arrangements may be made by contacting Kathryn Wall at kbwall@ncsu.edu or (919) 513-7004.

This is a preorder plant sale only. There will be no on-site sale. The opportunity to purchase these plants is a membership benefit.

Henry's voodoo lily

A lovely and easy small voodoo lily for the garden. In spring, the flower emerges from the ground opening to reveal a plastic-textured spathe with a tall spike in the center. If it is pollinated, expect a column of dark blue fruits. The single leaf is held on a stout, speckled stalk. Easy in the garden. These are first year seedlings so do not expect flowers for a couple of years.

A new selection of one of the most reliable garden perennials. In spring the stems are topped with clusters of icy blue flowers. The fine textured needles are held on reddish stems and will turn vivid gold in the fall.

The Pretty Lady series of windflowers are much more compact than the species. This form has luscious white flowers with a contrasting ring of gold stamens. They provide excellent, tough color in the late season and will spread just enough to create a spectacular show in the garden.

This semi-everegreen fern has lacy, cutleaf fronds. The veins and spores are visible on the upper side of the frond, giving it the name "upside-down fern." It adds great contrast and texture to the shady garden. Excellent in groupings or mass planted as a ground cover, it is one of the most sought after ferns. Easy to grow and deer resistant.

Few plants have made our mouths water quite like this showy woody perennial which bursts from the ground in spring with bright gold pinnate leaves. Clusters of white flowers are followed by showy black fruits. Best with just a few hours of sun, in full shade the leaves will be chartreuse rather than gold but still beautiful. This one will be a definite show-stopper in the garden.

A great textural plant for the garden with wiry stems to nearly 4’, mostly without leaves. It adds an airy but substantial presence in the garden. This very hardy South African plant takes on a bluish cast with age. Mostly inconspicuous white flowers give rise to red fruits in fall.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Frizelliae'

This form of Eurasian lady fern was selected for its exceptionally and uncharacteristically frilly fronds. The narrow fronds bear alternating, almost fuzzy, rounded projections which give it a unique texture in the woodland garden. Best in shade and organic soils but will adapt to less ideal conditions, too. Deer resistant.

Baptisia 'Royal Purple'

This is perhaps the mostly deeply saturated purple available in a baptisia. In the Mt. Cuba Center trials, established plants bore an average of 120, 24"+ long flower spikes. Baptisia are easy and long-lived in the garden as well as deer and rabbit resistant.

This beautyberry comes from a 2018 JCRA collection on Tianmushan in Zhejiang Province of China. From the collection log, "Medium-sized shrub to 6' with 3" × 1.5" narrowly ovate leaves; fruit small, pale iridescent lavender, quite showy." MWZ18-091.

Camellia 'Elina Cascade'

We first saw this lovely camellia in the garden of Akira Shibamichi in Japan in 2006. It made an incredibly elegant evergreen shrub with gracefully arching branches clothed in small, burgundy tinted leaves. Cheery pink buds open to delicate white-pink flowers in midwinter. Shibamichi-san named the plant for a granddaughter so you know it is a winner.

This federally endangered Florida native is a surprisingly hardy (zone 5) small tree. The leaves are 1/2–2/3 the size of our native fringetree but the flowers are still 1" wide and held in showy clusters. We believe this is a male clone meaning it will have a showier flower display than a female but will not bear the blue fruit in fall. This species grows naturally on sandy hummocks and is best with reasonably well-drained soil.

Few flowering trees can match the dazzling display and uber-tough constitution of Chinese fringe tree. ‘Perkins Pink’ is an uncommon pink-flowered cultivar of American yellowwood. Intensely fragrant wisteria-like pink flowers on drooping panicles flower in late spring. It was originally discovered in the 1930s at the Perkins Institute for the Blind, Watertown, Massachusetts. Yellowwood is a desperately under-appreciated native species that deserves much wider usage.

All the descriptions of this plant say the flowers open ruby red and mature to fuchsia but we have yet to see a picture actually showing a red flower. Expect bright pink, very large flowers with a darker stripe down the center of each petal. It starts flowering relatively early and is a good repeat bloomer.
