Welcome to our 2018 Members-only Preorder Plant Sale!  This is our biggest selection yet full of old favorites and new selections alike. We've got an updated site to make shopping even easier than before. The numbers available are limited, but, if we sell out of anything, make sure to check back as we may have been able to procure more plants.  Many of these plants are favorites of ours. We hope you enjoy the selection!

Sharing with Nonmembers

Feel free to share the plant sale with nonmember friends, but they must become members to place an order. Please share the public plant list with them. Nonmembers may become a member to participate in this plant sale and in our many other programs. New and newly renewed members will receive a link via e-mail to place their online order.

This is a preorder plant sale only. There will be no on-site sale. The opportunity to purchase these plants is a membership benefit.

This slow-growing 12' conifer is among the most well-loved of all conifers. The blue-tinged foliage is curiously curled around the stem displaying the silvery-white undersides. Korean fir is one of the few firs which grows well in the South. Plant in a well-drained soil and in sun to part shade.

This lovely 36" tall monkshood makes a low clumping plant with rounded, dissected leaves before exploding in summer with tall stalks of hooded white flowers rimmed in purple-blue. Some shade is recommended in Southern gardens.

This specific selection of our native and beloved butterfly weed grows naturally on clay soils and is much better adapted for heavy clay sites than the typically grown form. Baptisia are among the toughest of all of our native garden perennials. It forms a 3' by 3' clump of soft green foliage topped in spring by spikes of flowers which emerge white and age to blue for a two-toned effect. This incredibly cool boxwood cultivar is unlike any other you have seen before. Its habit is outreaching and arching, a bit loose compared to other boxwoods. Best described as the "non conformist of the common boxwood (Buxus sempervirens). These plants have been trained up as small weeping trees for added landscape punch. Plant in sun to shade.

We collected this beautyberry (MWT14-884) at over 5,500' in Taiwan just north of Lisong Hot Springs on the Nanbu Cross Island Highway where it made a beautiful shrub covered in small, bright purple fruits. We haven't planted this out yet, but we expect it to be perfectly hardy in zone 7. Check back in with us after we flower and fruit this plant for an ID on the species.

This unusual camellia makes a somewhat weeping shrub with an upright stem and cascading branches to about 6' tall. The narrow evergreen leaves are quite attractive and different from the typical camellia shape. Tubular red flowers often with white markings are also out of the ordinary as they drip from the branches in late winter. We think this is a very elegant form that should be much more widely grown in part sun to shade.

This brand new introduction from N.C.'s David Parks is among the heaviest blooming of all camellias with simply massive numbers of buds. The semi-double pink flowers are quite lovely and welcome in the fall as they open over a long period. We haven't grown this one yet but can't wait to give it a try.

This redbud has garnered much attention in recent years. A compact 10'–15' plant that flowers just as heavily as its full sized relations while keeping its leaves to half the typical size. The very regular leaf arrangement along the zigzag stems create a very tidy plant even after it finishes flowering. Of our national redbud collection, this is among the very best. This redbud from Denny Werner's incredible breeding program here at NC State University has fully double flowers which will knock your socks off. It has the Texas redbud genes giving it great heat tolerance and a super glossy leaf as well. It's been hardy through the winters in Missouri so you know its tough. We can't say enough good things about this new redbud. It grows up to 20' in sun to part shade.

A showy Japanese hybrid growing with huge flowers to 7" across. The soft white flowers have pink backs to the petals and flush to pink on the edges with a boss of purple stamens in the center. Prune this clematis lightly in winter to just above the large flower buds. Plant in sun to part shade.

This form of the typically blue species makes a bright show in midsummer when the tubular, lily or tulip-like 2.5" flowers open in tones of cheery pink-red. Mounds to 18" of aromatic foliage are topped in summer by a haze of pale lavender flowers. The foliage deters deer and the flowers are beloved by all sorts of pollinators. Plant in sun and well-drained soil where it will be quite drought tolerant once established. A gentle shearing after the first flush of blooms will ensure rebloom into fall.

One of the finest of broadleaved evergreen shrubs with arching branches to 3' in height and 4' wide with age. Beautiful red winter fruit. Rarely seen commercially due to propagation issues and slow growth (six years to a quart from seed!) but highly desirable. Grow in shade, even where quite dry. The foliage lasts for ages as a cut stem as an added bonus.

This lovely clumping bamboo makes an 8' tall feathery evergreen plant. The papery sheaths along the culm (bamboo stem) are orange-red for added color. Probably best out of the brightest afternoon sun in the garden. This deer-proof plant will not spread like some bamboos but makes a tight clump. Very lovely in the landscape.

Gardenia 'Prince Charles'

Prince Charles is an everblooming gardenia that will grow to about 4' tall by 5' wide. It is one of the first gardenias to bloom in May and will continue to bloom all season while the others rest or go dormant in the heat of summer. It will continue to bloom until a hard freeze induces dormancy. A great new introduction from N.C.'s Oakmont Nursery.

We first saw this amazing perennial (not to be confused with the annuals known popularly as geraniums) in the U.K. where the 16" mounds of foliage were topped from late spring to fall with masses of fully double pink flowers. Seven sons flower is among the finest of small flowering trees. It is a very tough plant with amazing white, peeling bark. Late summer, white flowers are loved by pollinators. After several weeks of show, the flowers drop revealing the rosy-red calyces (flower bases) which make the tree look like it is blooming with a completely different color. Temple of Bloom is said to have even better red calyx color than the species.

‘Angel Falls’ forms an attractively rounded mound of cascading green leaves with white to chartreuse centers. The green margins measure up to 2” wide, with a lighter green area appearing where the margins and centers overlap. The mature leaves arch downward with a rippled margin. This hosta has quickly become one of our favorites. 'Hans’ has corrugated, puckered, and folded leaves, with ruffling at the base. Glaucous blue-green, rounded leaves have a showy, wide, feathery, white center with green jetting between the center and margin. Pale lavender flowers appear in early to midsummer.

Hosta 'Rhino Hide'

'Rhino Hide' has leaves of extremely thick substance with wide, blue margins and a narrow, light green center that brightens to yellow. They are cupped and puckered, forming a medium to large sized clump 20" by 30" in the landscape. White flowers top the scapes in early to midsummer. This durable hosta exhibits greater sun tolerance than many other hostas, though partial shade is still best and the thick foliage is slug resistant.

This attractively white and green variegated cultivar of Ilex crenata shows a distinct upright growth habit at the JCRA. A bright statement in the garden. Sun to part shade. This winter jasmine reaches less than 4' tall but is vibrant with yellow-splashed leaves. From late winter until early spring, it's covered with yellow flowers and the willowy green stems are nice in winter. Beautiful year round for espalier, hanging baskets, or ground cover. Very drought tolerant once established. Best variegation is in full sun, young plants may need a year in the ground before showing much variegation.

Bright golden foliage on an evergreen shrub to 10' or more tall makes this a showy plant for full sun. Red young stems add to the display on this form of the culinary bay. This Mediterranean plant needs a warm, well-drained spot and should be grown in a container indoors during the winter unless planted out near the coast in a warm zone 8 garden.

It tolerates significant pruning.

Pink buds open to incredibly full and wonderfully fragrant pale pink flowers in spring on this beautiful magnolia. 'Centennial Blush' is a prolific bloomer with a fantastic floral display of delicate pink many-petaled blooms. 'Centennial Blush' can be grown as a large shrub or a small tree, perfectly suited for small urban gardens. For full sun, 15' tall and wide.

This older form of mahonia or grapeholly has been mostly supplanted in the trade by new varieties but is still among the showiest in flower. Upright, cane-like stems clothed in whorls of pinnate, hollyish evergreen leaflets are topped in winter with masses of fragrant gold flower spikes followed by blue-black fruit. If allowed, it can grow to 8' or more or be kept lower by pruning out the oldest stems. For sun or shade. Deer resistant.

We have been thoroughly impressed with the performance of this species in the garden where it makes an evergreen shrub with palmately compound to simple foliage. Sputnik-like flowers give rise to blue-black fruits. Expect it to grow to about 6' in a shady woodland garden. Plants may need some protection if planted this fall or keep it inside as a houseplant for the winter and plant in spring to ensure survival.

Selected for its heavy flower production and perfect habit all season, ‘Autumn Anthem’ is a true winner. It forms a dense clump of finely textured, dark green leaves with a narrow, white midrib and is nearly equal in height and spread. Before blooming, the foliage stands about 3 ½’ tall. In early to mid-fall, a profusion of feathery, cream colored plumes top the plant. For full sun and well-drained soils. Deer resistant.

This is the Texas equivalent of our native muhly grass forming a clump of blue-green very fine textured foliage. In fall, airy clouds of mauve flowers float over the foliage. This grass didn't get the message that everything is bigger in Texas since it is like a smaller form of Muhlenbergia capillaris. Best planted in masses in full sun in any soil. Deer resistant.

Prolific pink flower spikes top 10" tall, compact mounds of dense, aromatic, dark green foliage that is resistant to rabbit and deer grazing in summer.
