"Cercis and Buddleja Breeding Efforts at the JCRA"

Our native redbud, Cercis canadensis, demonstrates a remarkable range of variability in traits such as growth habit, plant size, leaf and flower color, flower morphology, and leaf shape. Denny will discuss the current status of his breeding work aimed at exploiting this variation for developing new cultivars of this popular landscape plant. New advances in redbud propagation technology currently being developed in the nursery industry, and what impact these technologies may have on potential performance of redbud in the landscape, will also be discussed. Denny will also discuss his breeding efforts in Buddleja, focusing on sterility, compact growth habit, and extending the range of flower color.
