As North Carolina grape producers wrap up their fall harvest, North Carolina State University plans to toast the rapid growth of Tar Heel vineyards and wineries at a first-of-its-kind celebration at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.

"Celebrate NC Wines!" will feature wine tastings, a public-opinion competition, hors d'oeuvres, and music on the grounds of one of the nation's leading public gardens.

Those who attend will have the chance to savor award-winning wines from eleven of the state's leading wineries, enjoy notable cheeses and other cuisine, and preview culinary advances made possible by NC State research.

Throughout the day, scientists with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate their work to strengthen the burgeoning grape and wine industry in North Carolina and to boost related specialty crops and enterprises.

Guests will be able to buy unopened bottles of wine from Biltmore Estate, Chatham Hill Winery, Childress Vineyards, Cypress Bend Vineyards, Duplin Wine Cellars, Hinnant Family Vineyards, Old North State Winery, RagApple Lassie Vineyards, Round Peak Vineyards, Shelton Vineyards, and The Winery at Iron Gate Farm.

In addition, the North Carolina Wine and Grape Council's 2005 awards for best North Carolina wines will be announced. (For a complete list of winners visit www.ncwine.org/awards/awards_05SFwinners.html.

The event starts at 2:00 PM, with the wine tastings ending at 5:00 PM. Coffee and dessert will be served from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Proceeds will be used to benefit College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' viticulture (the science of grape growing) research and the JC Raulston Arboretum.
