This year the JC Raulston Arboretum has elected to thread together several speakers whose depth of expertise can best illustrate our symposium's theme, "From Origins to Landscape." These noted professionals are highly sought after as individuals, with each well known to captivate a gardening audience. As a group, they will be synergistic as presenters. Symposium attendees will have that rare chance to hear transfixing accounts of how new plants become a part of the landscape palette, see how their discovery and hybrid development came about, and understand how new and well known ornamental plants became staples in our surrounding landscape. In a way, this symposium should take you from start to finish, in a matter of speaking!

About the Speakers

Dan Hinkley – Author, avid plantsman, instructor, and cofounder of Heronswood Nursery in Washington State. Dan writes frequently for Pacific Horticulture, The American Gardener, Horticulture Magazine, The Gardener, and Martha Stewart Living magazines and is a highly sought after lecturer. His book, The Explorer's Garden: Rare and Unusual Perennials, received the 1999 American Horticulture Society Book Award. He is currently working on the second book in the Explorer's Trilogy, featuring shrubs and vines. He will be sharing exciting new discoveries from his plant travels to Vietnam and Turkey.

Tom Ranney, Ph.D. – Professor and faculty member of NC State University. He works as a research scientist at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Fletcher, North Carolina, where his focus is on evaluation, selection, and development of new landscape plants. He will be discussing the benefits of controlled hybridization in connection with creating new and unique plants with enhanced pest resistance, adaptability, and ornamental merit.

Carol Reese – Extension Ornamental Horticulture Specialist for the Western District at the University of Tennessee. While she has received both her bachelors and masters degrees in horticulture from Mississippi State University, she says her real credentials come from being a descendant of several generations of bona fide plant nuts. Carol has had the opportunity to cruise many fine gardens, photographing many fanciful, ingenious, and humorous features that make a garden truly special, including some very imaginative ways of using plants for special effect.

Rick Schoellhorn, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and Floriculture Extension Specialist. He was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award by the Florida Nursery and Growers Association in 2003, has experience in retail nursery sales, golf course maintenance, wholesale nursery production and sales, and landscape and interiorscape installation and design. His talk will include origins of tropicals, and how to use tropicals in your garden, designs, and landscape contracting.

Michael Dirr, Ph.D. – Author; retired professor; lecturer; and highly awarded, honored, and well-known plantsman. He has made many significant contributions to horticulture through his work as a professor with both graduates and undergraduates, in his many writings and books, and as a lecturer to both professional and amateur gardeners. Join Michael Dirr's tour as he "walks and talks like the wind" about his favorite plants.

The symposium is being held in the Ruby C. McSwain Education Center at the JC Raulston Arboretum, Raleigh, North Carolina.
