Juried Photographic Competition and Exhibition

Calling all photographers! Do you have an eye for beauty? Would you like to share your work with other people who would appreciate it? If so, the Juried Photographic Competition is for you. Adults and youth can submit original photographs of garden or plant related subjects. Distinguished judges will determine the winning images and cash awards will be presented. The winning prints along with the judges' favorites will be displayed at the Arboretum beginning on Monday, September 15 and lasting through Friday, November 15 for the public to see. Don't delay! Start capturing your favorite images today. Maybe yours will become "Best in Show."

This competition is open to all levels of photography experience and to photographic prints only. There will be four prizes for adult entries: Best in Show will win $200, 1st place will win $100, 2nd place will win $75, and 3rd place will win $50. There will be a Best in Show for the youth category (age 16 and under) with the winning prize being $50.

Monday, August 26– E-mail sent to participants notifying them that their photographs were selected (or not)

Judges

Melissa Southern

Photographer and presenter, Melissa Southern, has been shooting since childhood and a working professional since 2003. She has photographed all over the United States as well as in Ireland, England, France, and Mexico. Melissa has photographs published in the Guide to the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution, Nature Photographer magazine, various product magazines, and several other publications. She has presented at Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend and the Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic (where she is a TEAM member for both events), Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), the City of Orlando, and Sarah P. Duke Gardens. She has served as a judge for numerous photography competitions over the years for various groups. Melissa has worked as a forensic photographer for fifteen years. She was the first International Association for Identification (IAI) Certified Forensic Photographer in North Carolina. Melissa has a B.A. in anthropology and an Associate Degree in photography.

Brian Fullington

Dawn Willis

Dawn has had had an interest in photography for a long time. In 2014, she was able to start exploring photography as a serious endeavor. She photographs a variety of subjects and especially enjoy seascapes and nature photography. Her work has won recognition in many contests and has been shown in numerous exhibits.

Dawn is a member of Carolinas ' Nature Photographers Association, Capital City Camera Club, Cary Photographic Artists, and Granpaparazzi. She has been vice president of Capital City Camera Club for three years and a member of the Cary Photographic Artists critique group for three years. The critique group sparked her interest in judging and she have mentored with other judges over the past few years.

She was a judge for the JCRA/CNPA Juried Photographic Competition and Exhibition last year and have guided others in their quest to become better photographers.

Online Submissions

Submission guidelines will be sent to newly registered participants once or twice a week. The frequency will likely increase towards the deadline. Cost
$20.00 for adults, $10.00 for youths. Each entrant may submit a limit of two entries per registration. Each participant is limited to one registration. $10.00 additional fee if not pre-registered by Sunday, August 4.

Registration fees for this event cannot be canceled.
