Home gardens are often designed for beauty and human use, but there are other creatures to keep in mind when creating and managing landscapes. Learn how to create and manage beautiful bird-friendly landscapes from Barbara Driscoll, New Hope Audubon Society, and Preston Montague, M.L.A.

May 11

"Introduction to Bird-friendly Landscapes"
Barbara Driscoll
Introductoin Bird-friendly Landscapes is an extension of New Hope Audubon Society's Bird-friendly Habitat program. Students will learn why native plants are important for biodiversity and to support birds, the components of a bird friendly habitat, the ecosystem potential of keystone plants, and which plants are the best for birds. The class will address why invasive plants are bad for our ecosystems and provide information on how to address them. Students will understand the benefits of a new garden aesthetic.

"Design Approaches for Bird-friendly Landscapes"
Preston Montague

Design Considerations for Bird-friendly Landscapes is an extension of the New Hope Audubon Society's Bird-friendly Habitat program. Students will learn basic landscape design approaches that will help transform their yard into a bird-friendly habitat.

June 1

"Management Techniques for Improving Bird-friendly Landscapes"
Preston Montague

Management Techniques for Bird-friendly Landscapes is an extension of the New Hope Audubon Society's Bird-friendly Habitat program. Students will learn basic management techniques for creating resources for birds on their properties.

About the Speakers

Barbara Driscoll

Barbara Driscoll is currently the president of New Hope Audubon Society and the co-chair for New Hope Audubon's Bird-friendly Habitat committee which promotes creating bird-friendly habitats. She retired in 2013 after being a physical scientist for 27 years with the Environmental Protection Agency. Barbara is an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys watching birds, butterflies, plants, and animals around the world. Her hobbies include photography, walking her three hounds, and removing invasive plants.

Preston Montague, M.L.A.

Preston Montague is a landscape architect and artist who developed a passion for the natural world while growing up in the rural foothills of Virginia. Currently, he lives in Durham, North Carolina, working on projects that encourage stronger relationships between people and the natural world for the purpose of improving public and environmental health.

Continuing Education Credit

Each class is 1.5 PDH for Landscape Architects.

Cost
$75.00 for members, $100.00 for nonmembers.

Advance registration is required. Please register online using our registration e-store (in-person program and online program). Registration is limited and is considered complete when payment is received.
Cancellation
Program cancellations can be made up to two weeks before the program's start date. A 15% cancellation fee applies.
