Plants especially adapted to Piedmont North Carolina conditions are collected and evaluated in an effort to find superior plants for use in southern landscapes.

New crevice garden

New Crevice Garden

The Crevice Garden is a brand new garden installed on top of the Ruby C. McSwain Education Center. It's believed this is the first crevice garden in the Southeast. These gardens were popularized in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s.

Many small plants can be grown in a limited amount of space making crevice gardens ideal for a small landscapes. Soil is wedged between the layers of rock allowing roots grow deeply into the soil where the temperature and moisture conditions are more stable enabling us to grow a new palette of plants.

Around Carolina (Time Warner News), caught Kenton Seth and Tim Alderton building the new garden when they were here filming (1:36).
