"Plant Parenthood: From Planting to Pruning to Pest Management"
Bryce Lane
NC State University

The most frequent questions I get from new gardeners typically focus on the 3 “P’s”: planting, pruning & pest management. This talk focuses on introducing the proper practices for mastering all three gardening tasks.

Ashley Troth, PhD
N.C. Cooperative Extension

Every Piedmont gardener knows the frustration: clay (or sometimes sandy!) soils that are difficult to work with. But beyond their bad reputation, our clays can provide a great foundation for edible and ornamental gardeners. This talk will cover soil basics, including nutrient and organic matter management.

"Yes, You Can Garden in Winter, Here!"
Keith Lukowski
Durham Garden Center

Understanding our hardiness zone and what it means to the home gardener is a great foundation.  Keeping the sweet-spot of zone 7b in mind, we'll look at what we can grow for winter interest that will still thrive in the heat of the Triangle's summers.

Bryce Lane
Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus and Lecturer Emeritus
Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University

Bryce Lane discovered his passion for plants, and telling others about them working at a local garden center through high school and college. After earning his BS and MS in Horticulture, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University as an Instructor. He spent 34 years teaching and advising over 20,000 students. Bryce retired in 2014, but still teaches part-time in the department. For 11 seasons he hosted and produced a three-time, Emmy winning, UNC TV public television show called “In the Garden With Bryce Lane”. He now spends his time giving horticulture talks, doing leadership, and communication training, teaching part-time at NC State, and training NC extension agents in video production. An avid gardener, Bryce has gardened on the same one quarter acre plot for 40 years.
