Plant of the Month
Pittosporum tobira 'Kansai Sunburst'
By JCRA Staff
In the garden, Pittosporum tobira is valued as a durable evergreen shrub with pleasing foliage—dark green older leaves contrast nicely with chartreuse newly emerging foliage. Flowers (only produced on older plants) are delightfully sweetly scented, perfuming the air well away from the plant itself. Pittosporum is hardy in zone 7 and is best grown in sun to part-shade.
This bright cultivar of Japanese pittosporum came to us from Japan. New growth is brilliant yellow before softening to a creamy edge on the evergreen foliage. Reports indicate that this cultivar may be somewhat tender.
JCRA supporters interested in procuring this plant for their own gardens are in luck. This plant will be featured in our Connoisseur Plants program. Read more about the Connoisseur Plants program in Arlene's article below.
Connoisseur Plants for JCRA Friends
By Arlene Calhoun, Volunteer and Membership Coordinator
Don’t miss your chance to add some of the rarest plants we have to offer to your garden.
Connoisseur Plants continue to be a member favorite, a member benefit that is anxiously awaited and meticulously planned. These are very special plants propagated by us exclusively for qualifying members. They are difficult to find plants, plants that have caught the eye of JCRA collectors and curators. You won’t want to miss this year's selection of 30 different plants!
Access to these plants is limited to our Sponsor, Patron, Founder, Benefactor, and Philanthropist membership levels. It is our way of thanking these members for their generous support. For specific details of membership levels and their benefits please visit our member page.
How It Works
All members who are at a Connoisseur Plants level before December 31, 2014, will get access to the plant selection. Award letters and catalogs will be distributed by February 15, 2015. Plants will be distributed in mid-March 2015.
Advance your membership to the next level to take full advantage of this year’s selection. We make it easy to make your tax-deductible gift using our secure giving site, or mail gifts to Arlene Calhoun, JC Raulston Arboretum, Campus Box 7522, Raleigh, NC 27695-7522.
End-of-year Gifts
By Anne M. Porter, Director of Development
Your 2014 gift of $500 or more to the Endowment for Excellence or any JCRA program (not including special sponsorships) makes you eligible for Connoisseur Plants—regardless of your membership level. Your gift in support of the many fine programs shows that you champion a strong financial future for the JC Raulston Arboretum. This is just a small token of our appreciation of your investment.
What a great way to make a tax-deductible end-of-year gift, get some great plants, and invest in a stronger Arboretum. So hurry... your membership upgrade and program support gifts must be received by December 31, 2014, to be eligible for this year's Connoisseur Plants program.

Holiday Wreath Workshops
By Christopher Todd Glenn, Programs and Education Coordinator
December 2, 2014 – 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM
Decorate your home for the holidays with a designer wreath you made at the JC Raulston Arboretum. Hands-on instruction will be provided, and all participants will create a wreath of their own to take home.
All materials needed for these workshops will be provided including a vast assortment of greens from the JCRA's plant collections for your wreath, however, participants are encouraged to bring items for their wreaths or to share.
Due to popular demand, we're offering two workshops—one at 1:00 PM and another at 4:00 PM. These workshops fill quickly so register early to reserve your spot. Online registration (1:00 PM and 4:00 PM) is available. For more information, please contact Chris Glenn at (919) 513-7005 or chris_glenn@ncsu.edu.
