JC Raulston Arboretum e-Update
July 2017
Your Monthly News and Updates
Director's Note
By Mark Weathington, Director
July is a great time for the staff and volunteers at the JC Raulston Arboretum despite the steamy, sauna-like afternoons. By this time, our interns have been working with us for about half the summer and we've gotten to know them well. As always, they are a pleasure to work with and constantly impress us all with their hard work. I really do look forward to the next generation of horticulture industry leaders, I think we're in great hands.

An internship isn't free of course. It costs the JCRA about $5,000 per intern and with five total internships, that cost is more than a drop in the bucket. We have several endowments which help to cover the cost but the rest comes from generous donations from our members and volunteers. Without this sort of support, we would never be able to provide such a rich experience for these students.

I hope you'll brave the heat to come take a stroll through the garden and say hello to some of our dedicated interns.

Say Hello to Leaf & Limb

By Kathryn Wall, Membership and Volunteer Coordinator

Leaf & Limb is your newest JCRA member benefit provider and I'm excited to introduce you to this local business. I first met Basil Camu, one of the owners, when he offered to bring out a team of volunteers to the Arboretum. Each month, Leaf & Limb goes out into the community on the first Friday to volunteer with community groups, and we were excited to be selected. While he was anticipating doing things like weeding and mulching, Basil was very willing to take on a "wish list" of tasks put together by our director, Mark Weathington.

On June 2, Leaf & Limb came out and impressed us with the comradery and happy spirit of their crew. They are very skilled, holding many accreditations and certifications. Their efficiency kept everyone scrambling to keep up with them as they worked through that wish list. But best of all, we forged new relationships and look forward to working together on some future educational efforts. Leaf & Limb also joins the Arboretum as a Silver Sponsor.

As one of our new member benefit providers, Leaf & Limb will be offering current JCRA members a free tree and shrub health assessment, not to exceed one hour ($200.00 value). Let them know you’re a member when you contact Leaf & Limb at (919) 787-9551, or find them on the Web at https://www.leaflimb.com.

Don't forget to take a look at our current member benefit providers listed on the JCRA's Web site. Thanks to their partnership with JCRA, our membership value makes sense and often pays for itself! Please thank them for their support.

Japanese Maple Grafting Workshops

By Christopher Todd Glenn, Programs and Education Coordinator

Saturday, July 29, 2017 – 8:30 AM (wait list started) and 1:00 PM

Grafting is the only method possible to propagate some plants. Many rare and expensive plants are grafted. In this workshop, participants learn to graft Japanese maples from two experts. Tim and Matt Nichols will discuss and demonstrate grafting techniques and then will individually assist each participant as they graft their own plants.

JCRA staff will collect scion wood prior to the workshop. However, participants will be asked ahead of time which cultivar they're most interested in grafting. The workshop's fee covers all needed supplies, excluding a grafting knife unless paid for at the time of registration. Each participant will graft a minimum of five Japanese maples.

For more information, please contact Chris Glenn at (919) 513-7005 or chris_glenn@ncsu.edu. Space is limited—register today!

Summertime Favorites—Interns and Howling Cow Ice Cream

By Arlene Calhoun, Assistant Director

Traditionally, every July, a group of JCRA volunteers hosts an ice cream social for our wonderful summer interns and fellow volunteers. It is a time to show appreciation and applaud the dedication of both these amazingly dedicated groups.

It occurred to us, that many of you support our Summer Internship Program and might enjoy this casual opportunity to meet them personally. It's a very light-hearted affair that includes a fun question and answer session with these exceptional students.
