- Chenonceaux was a gift of King Henri II to his mistress Diane de Poitiers in 1547. Its architect, Philibert de l'Orme designed a building spanning the Cher river. Upon Henri II's death, Diane de Poitiers had to give up the castle to the king's widow, Catherine de Medici.
