Tired of winter? Ready for spring? We are, and we're kicking the season off right with a hybrid plant sale (on-site and online). This year's spring plant sale opens with an online sale and ends with our traditional on-site sale during our Raulston Blooms! Spring Festival

Our sales have a reputation for including hot new introductions, hard to find specialty plants, and our favorite reliable performers. This sale has it all. Our horticulturists have been busy creating an amazing plant list including plants from greenhouses and nurseries around the country!

glossy abelia

Lightly-scented white tubular flowers with pink calyxes at the ends of the branches in late spring. Variegated foliage edged in white with hints of grayish green. Blooms on new wood so you can prune in late winter or as needed.

flowering maple

A dark-red flowered, sun-loving shrub to 6' tall with maple-like leaves and pendant mini-hibiscus-like flowers. Spreads via rhizomes to make a patch.

Acer laevigatum 'Hóng Lóng'
red dragon smooth maple

In China, JCRA director Mark Weathington collected this peculiar evergreen maple with a more willow–ey leaf. Deep burgundy new growth becomes silvery blue if given plenty of sun. Hardy, but take care during first winter. JCRA introduction.

Acer palmatum (ex. 'Bloodgood')
japanese maple

Seedlings from a red-leaved Japanese maple called 'Bloodgood'. Will exhibit a range of traits but likely have some degree of red leaves. We don't know who the daddy is, but it is likely to be a superior variety with interesting traits. Browse them all and pick your favorite. Fantastic small trees.

Acer palmatum 'Tsukasa Silhouette'
columnar Japanese maple

This cultivar was obtained from Tsukasa Maple Nursery outside of Tokyo, Japan where it was noted as the sun set for its fine, fastigiate habit.

Milly Rock Yellow Terracotta Improved yarrow

Compact mounding form with bright flowers all summer (as long as spent blooms are pinched off). Performs best in well-drained soils.

sweet flag

A evergreen groundcover for moist soils or shallow water. The grass-like leaves smell pleasant when bruised. Spreads slowly via rhizomes to make a patch.

Adiantum capillus-veneris 'Bermuda Run'
maidenhair fern

Globe-spanning fern species that spreads along the ground (or on a wall) to form a mat. This specimen was collected in Bermuda and yet is perfectly hardy in Raleigh. Light green pinnules are anchored on attractive thin black stipes.

Maidenhair fern is a native southeast U.S. fern. Like all ferns, this is quite deer resistant while looking delicate and elegant.

Aesculus parviflora
bottlebrush buckeye

Bottlebrush buckeye is a native deciduous shrub with a spreading growth habit and upright panicles of white flowers in summer. Resistant to the leaf scorch that plagues most Aesculus, it rewards you in the autumn with a nice yellow fall color.

Agastache foeniculum 'Golden Jubilee'
anise hyssop

Chartreuse leaves set this variety apart from the rest. Same fragrant foliage though. A 2003 AAS award winner. Pollinators love the lavender flowers. Humidity tolerant.

Agave lophantha 'Splendida'
thorn-crested century plant

One of the easiest agaves to grow in our area, this compact one spreads by underground rhizomes forming a beautiful mass of multiple crowns. Each dark green leaf has a central gold stripe. Native to the higher elevations of Mexico, it can withstand temperatures to 0°F.

Agave striata var. striata
narrow-leaved century plant

Needle agave is a unique among the agaves for its round, cylindrical leaves. Plants form dense rosettes crowded with these long, very sharply pointed leaves, the rosette reaching 24"–36" across. A specimen growing in our Southwestern Garden for over 10 years here at the JCRA readily offsets and has flowered several times. Flower spikes reach about 10' tall and are crowded with bright yellow, quasi-tubular flowers that attract insects and hummingbirds alike. Sharp drainage is essential for acclimation to cold winter conditions in all hardy agaves.

Allium cernuum
nodding onion

Flowers face up because stalks bend 180°. Textural treat. Appreciates light afternoon shade in hot climates. Plants will naturalize by self-seeding and bulb offsets; deadhead flowers before seed sets to help control spread.

Thicket-forming shrub. Small leaves and thousands of vanilla-scented flowers in summer. Blooms on new wood so you can prune and shape it almost any time. Growing season pruning stimulates flower production.
