Tired of winter? Ready for spring? We are, and we're kicking the season off right with a hybrid plant sale (on-site and online). This year's spring plant sale opens with an online sale and ends with our traditional on-site sale during our Raulston Blooms! Spring Festival

Our sales have a reputation for including hot new introductions, hard to find specialty plants, and our favorite reliable performers. This sale has it all. Our horticulturists have been busy creating an amazing plant list including plants from greenhouses and nurseries around the country!

Acer laevigatum 'Hóng Lóng'
red dragon smooth maple

Arboretum director, Mark Weathington, collected this specimen in China. The species is one of the peculiar evergreen maples with a leaf more willow–ey than maple–ey. This particular selection has deep burgundy new growth which becomes silvery blue later in the season if given plenty of sun. Quite hardy in Raleigh so far but care should be taken with these young plants for their first winter. A JC Raulston Arboretum introduction.

A hybrid of several species of Agastache to combine the bright flower colors of the western species with the humidity tolerance of the eastern species. This particular selection produces orange summer flowers atop a clump of fragrant foliage. Deer resistant and fragrant. As the common name suggests, hummingbirds love this plant. Drought tolerant.

narrow-leaved century plant

Needle agave is a unique among the agaves for its round, cylindrical leaves. Plants form dense rosettes crowded with these long, very sharply pointed leaves, the rosette reaching 24"–36" across. A specimen growing in our Southwestern Garden for over 10 years here at the JCRA readily offsets and has flowered several times. Flower spikes reach about 10' tall and are crowded with bright yellow, quasi-tubular flowers that attract insects and hummingbirds alike. Sharp drainage is essential for acclimation to cold winter conditions in all hardy agaves.

The flower stalks of this ornamental onion bend 180° so that the flowers face down instead of up. A lovely textural treat. You can use the leaves of this ornamental onion as chives in cooking too. Appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Plants will naturalize by self-seeding and bulb offsets in optimum growing conditions. Deadhead flowers before seed sets to help control any unwanted spread.

Aloysia gratissima 'Punky Brewster'

Aloysia gratissima is a thicket-forming shrub with small leaves and thousands of small vanilla-scented flowers in summer that attract goldfinches and bees. 'Punky Brewster' is the name given to a Plant Delights collection of this species from Brewster County, Texas. Blooms on new wood which means you can prune it almost any time to shape it into a hedge, small tree, or encourage it to become bushier. Pruning during the growing season also stimulates flower production. Drought tolerant.
