Welcome to our 2020 Members-only Preorder Plant Sale!  This is our biggest selection yet full of old favorites and new selections alike. We've a new site to make shopping even easier than before. The numbers available are limited, but, if we sell out of anything, make sure to check back as we may have been able to procure more plants.  Many of these plants are favorites of ours. We hope you enjoy the selection!

Sharing with Nonmembers

Feel free to share the plant sale with nonmember friends, but they must become members to place an order. Please share the public plant list with them. Nonmembers may become a member to participate in this plant sale and in our many other programs. New and newly renewed members will receive a link via e-mail to place their online order.

Payment and Pickup

Payment is due at the time of ordering. Sales will end on Monday, October 12 at 5:00 pm. Plants will be available for pick-up on:

This is a preorder plant sale only. There will be no on-site sale. The opportunity to purchase these plants is a membership benefit.

The Tutti Frutti series of yarrows were recently bred in the Netherlands. Plants are compact and bushy, with very uniform blooming over a long season. This chrysanthemum forms an attractive bushy mound of lobed green leaves edged with silver that are appealing all season long. Small yellow button flowers appear very late in the fall, sometimes lasting until Christmas. Easily divided in early spring.

Few plants have made our mouths water quite like this showy herbaceous perennial which bursts from the ground in spring with bright gold pinnate leaves. Clusters of white flowers are followed by showy black fruits. Best with just a few hours of sun, in full shade the leaves will be chartreuse rather than gold but still beautiful. This one will be a definite show-stopper in the garden.

This is the largest leafed and fruited Japanese ardisia we've ever grown. It makes a spreading ground cover tolerant of quite tough, dry conditions once it gets established. The tops can be killed back in winter but it should resprout by mid-spring. Ardisia can also be grown as a lovely houseplant where the bright red fruits which are held beneath the leaves are more apparent. This form will re-flower and fruit if grown indoors.

This dwarf evergreen ground cover came to us from our good friend Ted Stephens at Nurseries Caroliniana. It makes a wonderful carpet even in deep shade where the spreading stems are topped by dark green leaves with small white to pale pink flowers followed by red fruit. Marlberries have been among the JCRA's favorite plants since our earliest days and continue to be among our top choice for shade gardens.

The species A. basalis is fairly new, being named in 2010 from a specimen collected by Greg Speichert who obtained it from China's Nanjing Botanic Garden. A tall, narrow-leaved Aspidistra the 30" × 1.5" leaves slowly spread to a 4' patch. The purple flowers are unusual but are produced at ground level in the middle of winter and so go unnoticed unless you are specifically looking for them.

Aspidistra grandiflora 'Big Spotty' is a Plant Delights Nursery introduction of a Vietnamese cast iron plant. Aspidistra grandiflora 'Big Spotty' forms an 18" tall × 2' wide specimen of glossy green, 4" wide leaves, each heavily spotted with large, bright yellow dots. Not cold hardy in Raleigh so this will be a house plant for most of you.

Arboretum supporter Ted Stephens found this selection in a garden in Japan with no cultivar name and took cuttings of it. It has large variegated cream-yellow speckled leaves with huge red berries if a male pollinator is nearby. The mammoth size fruit are easily distinguished from the run of the mill aucubas available in the trade.

Aucuba japonica 'Natsu-no-Kumo' was discovered in Japan by Seiju Yamaguchi. It makes a 6' tall shrub clothed with broad, evergreen, toothed leaves which emerge creamy white in spring before turning dark green. The newly emerged creamy foliage is highly susceptible to sunburn so lots of shade and even moisture are recommended to get the best results … which are stunning when achieved.

You can thank the late Texas plantsman, Lynn Lowery, for collecting this unusual beautyberry in Mexico. Like other beautyberries (Callicarpa), this deciduous shrub is grown for its arching branches of berries in late summer to fall. Fruit color is best described as a super dark wine, nearly black. at the JCRA the fruit remains on the plant late into the season. Plants can reach about 6' to 8' tall but are best maintained by cutting to the ground each winter. Plant in full sun to light shade.

Japanese lantern-type buds open to striking pink, octopus-like flowers above strong, deeply cut foliage. Long bloom time and easy to grow. This spreader does very well in the South. Tolerant of most soils.

The JCRA has been trying out many sinningias over the last few years because the hardy ones make excellent garden plants that feature fuzzy leaves and spikes of colorful tube-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds. Sinningia eumorpha is a somewhat new one for us (2015) that so far has proven cold hardy. Attractive leaves look a lot like African violet and the wide, tubular, white flower is reminiscent of Digitalis, Hemiboea, or florists' Gloxinia. Makes a good house plant too. Likely best to keep indoors for this first winter and plant out in spring.
