"An Empire of Plants: People and Plants that Changed the World"

The talk explores seven plants whose discovery and cultivation changed the destinies of countries, including the United States. The lecture discusses the complexity of trade routes, exploration and exploitation, pioneer planters and merchants, and piracy and shipwrecks associated with tobacco, cotton, sugar, tea, rubber, quinine, and opium.
Toby Musgrave is one of the United Kingdom's leading authorities in garden history and landscape design. Since leaving Reading University's Department of Horticulture in 1994 he has embarked on a freelance career as a television and radio presenter, author, journalist, consultant, designer and lecturer. In 1998, Toby published his first book, The Plant Hunters, which has sold in excess of 25,000 copies. It was followed in 2000 by An Empire of Plants and Courtyard Gardens. His new book, Cottage Gardens is hot off the presses, and he has begun work on Passions and Pleasures: The Secret History of Gardens, due for publication by the National Trust in 2005.

- Free for Friends of the JC Raulston Arboretum and North American Rock Garden Society members, NC State University students (with ID), and Department of Horticultural Science faculty and staff, all others $5.00. Bring your membership card to check in quickly, but as always, we will have a membership list at registration.
