We usually think of chewed leaves, torn petals, or bug-bitten stems as signs of trouble in the garden — but sometimes, a little damage can be a very good thing. In this week’s Midweek Program, our Research Technician and resident plant whisperer Tim Alderton will explore the fascinating ways some plants not only tolerate damage, but actually benefit from it.

We’ll take a closer look at plants like Aristolochia fimbriata, which gets devoured by Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars each year — bouncing back stronger while turning our garden into a summer butterfly haven. From host plants that support pollinators to tough-as-nails perennials that grow back better after being browsed or broken, Tim will dig into the surprising concept of “anti-fragility” in the plant world — and share stories of plants that thrive on tough love.

Whether you’re looking to garden more sustainably, support wildlife, or just see your plants in a new light, this program will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the resilience (and generosity) of the green world.
