Stripy leaves, creamy edges, yellow splashes, and speckles galore — variegated plants have a way of stealing the spotlight. But have you ever wondered how those patterns happen? In this week’s Midweek Program, our Research Technician Evan and Director Mark will dig into the science behind foliar variegation and reveal what’s really going on beneath the surface (quite literally).

A large variegated Aucuba japonica

This isn’t just a science lesson — it’s a gardener’s guide to understanding and working with variegated plants. We’ll unpack the fascinating biology behind those stripes, spots, and splotches, and along the way, we’ll talk about how to propagate variegated plants without losing their flair, how to handle reversion when it rears its decidedly unremarkable head, and how to make the most of these showstoppers in your garden.

Whether you’re a science-minded gardener or just here for the pretty leaves, this program will leave you seeing spots (and stripes and splotches) in the best possible way.
