The northern reaches of Patagonia in western Argentina encompass an expansive area, covering landscapes of wide-open arid steppe to lush forests of Nothofagus and windswept, barren, volcanic peaks. The travels took us from southwestern most Río Negro Province north to west central Neuquén Province following the spine of the Andes. This trip highlighted the flora of this diverse region showing both familiar and exotic genera of plants and a few animals and the sometimes extreme places where they live.

Plus bonus 15-minute talk on "NARGS Extension Trip to Southern Patagonia, 2022" By Jim Jahnke, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Southern Patagonia is often viewed as a cold and windy wasteland at the end of the Americas, reached only with difficulty. It nevertheless attracts mountaineers, backpackers, botanizers, and bandits alike. Our travel to this place, as predicted, was not straightforward, but the Moreno glacier, Mount Chaltén (the smoking mountain of the Tehueleche), in addition to our finding the "virgin's slippers," the striking Calceolaria uniflora, made this extension to the Northern Patagonian trip a most memorable journey.
