Gardenside Chat with Bryce

Bryce Lane, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus and Lecturer Emeritus, Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University

  • Monday, January 8, 2024 – 6:30 pm8:00 pm

When gardeners come together to discuss their shared passion, beautiful things are bound to happen. And who better to lead such a discussion than Bryce Lane with his electric personality and unbridled enthusiasm for horticulture? The Gardenside Chat is a fantastic opportunity to join Bryce and your fellow gardeners for an exhilarating and elucidating discussion about all things plants and gardening, without the commitment of attending a multi-week class.

Bryce presenting in the garden

Bryce will deliver a brief presentation about a horticultural topic that's captured his attention, and then he'll open the floor to questions, answers and discussion. You're invited to ask about whatever's on your mind, be it the topic at hand, or any gardening topic that has your attention right now. With the wealth of gardening experience and wisdom collected in the classroom, not just from Bryce but from your classmates as well, this is certain to be a wonderful evening of learning, sharing and growing.

We are very pleased to offer Bryce's Gardenside Chat both in-person and online, because it means we can see all our out-of-state friends, and offer those of us nearby a bit of flexibility if we can't make it out to the garden. The Arboretum's Education Assistant, Blake Wentley, will be on hand to facilitate the discussion for the online folks and do everything in his power to be a generally positive presence. This is going to be a truly historic event, and we hope we'll see you on January 8th for our inaugural Gardenside Chat with Bryce!

About Bryce Lane

Bryce has been teaching students, home gardeners and garden professionals for over 40 years. Many may know Bryce from his UNC TV public television show called "In the Garden With Bryce Lane" which was on the air for 11 seasons and won three Emmys. Others may know him as a student from his time in the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University.

Growing up in Western Massachusetts, Bryce discovered his passion for plants and telling others about them while working at a local garden center through high school and college. After earning his B.S. in plant science from the University of Massachusetts in 1979 and an M.S. in horticulture from The Ohio State University in 1981, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University where he taught in the two-year and four-year programs, majors and non-majors, served as the undergraduate coordinator and even the interim director of the JC Raulston Arboretum.

He has received numerous local, regional, and national teaching awards and is frequently invited to speak at many workshops and symposia about teaching as well as horticulture and gardening. Most importantly, he has been married for 45 years to his high school sweetheart, has two happily married daughters, and six incredible grandchildren. He is an avid gardener who has gardened in the same spot for more than 39 years with many stories, advice and passion to share with other gardeners regardless of their experience!
