When J. C. Raulston came to North Carolina at NCSU in 1975, he had already observed that only about 40 plants made up 90% of the landscape in the U.S. He vowed to change that and increase plant diversity in our landscapes, making "new" plants available to the state's nursery industry through the arboretum that he founded with some difficulty at NCSU.

When he died in 1996, he had introduced 405 different kinds of 250 species of plants through the NCSU Arboretum, now the JC Raulston Arboretum.  In 2004, "Horticulture Magazine" considered him one of the 30 most significant gardeners and horticulturists of the past 300 years. Bobby will discuss his life, professional career, and some plants he introduced.
