North American Rock Garden Society (Piedmont Chapter) Lecture

"Reynolda Gardens: What Was Old Is New Again"
Jon Roethling

Cohosted by the Piedmont Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society and the JC Raulston Arboretum

  • Saturday, November 4, 2023 – 10:00 am11:30 am

Jon Roethling is director of Reynolda Gardens, a 134-acre horticultural oasis that is part of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. The gardens date to 1917 and were originally part of the large estate of the tobacco magnate, R. J. Reynolds. The gardens have been renovated several times over the decades while some areas were neglected and invasive plants have moved in. Jon joined Reynolda in late 2018 and with staff and volunteers and fundraising efforts have slowly renovated parts of the garden—the trails, the formal garden, the rose garden, the blue and yellow garden, the main allée, etc. Jon will give a brief history of the gardens and show examples of recent renovations undertaken since he joined Reynolda that reflect the spirit, rather than duplicate, the original 1917 garden.
