Gardening in the South is back for new and experienced gardeners alike! Join us for a series of presentations that are guaranteed to expand your horizons. This year's lineup includes speakers Basil Camu, Bryce Lane and Mark Weathington. Basil will introduce us to the ins and outs of taking care of our beloved trees, Bryce will offer us crafty new tips to improve our gardening skills, and Mark will shed light on hardy plants that we can add to our collections at home.

Trees are incredible! They are SO essential to the health of our Planet, which means we need as many as we can get. We need to care for the trees we have now and plant new ones. But how do we properly plant new trees? How can we care for existing trees in a manner that maximizes positive benefits for all members of our ecosystem? What about soil? What about pests? How should we prune? We'll teach you how to do these things, as well as how to avoid common pitfalls of caring for your trees. Healthy trees in abundance create happy people and a vibrant planet.

Whether you are new to gardening, new to gardening in the South, or just looking to improve your gardening skills, this talk will provide tips that will help you master gardening in the Southeast. First, we will identify the major advantages and disadvantages to gardening in a southern region? Then, Bryce will discuss many of the classic issues we gardeners face in the South, such as plant selection and placement, pruning, heat load, overwintering, containers, fall gardening, and last but not least, how do you properly prune those crepe myrtles?

We've all killed plants, it's part of the process of learning to garden but not all plants are created equal. Some plants are trickier to grow than others and some are almost impossible to kill. We'll talk about the toughest of the tough, most problem-free plants for the southern landscape from perennials to shrubs and trees.

Basil’s official title? Chief vision officer and wizard of things. He is also a Treecologist and ISA Board Certified Master Arborist. Basil went to Duke, where he graduated magna cum laude with a double major in economics and history. After working as an economic analyst, Basil decided to abandon this career path and become an entrepreneur. If he is not working, Basil's favorite pastime is hanging out with his amazing wife and sons. His favorite hobbies include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, soccer, power lifting, long distance running, hiking, traveling, and reading a good biography. Favorite foods? Blazing hot peppers, pickles, garlic, capers, and anything from Lucette Grace (best pastries ever!)

Bryce Lane
Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Emeritus and Lecturer Emeritus
Department of Horticultural Science, NC State University

Bryce Lane discovered his passion for plants, and telling others about them working at a local garden center through high school and college. After earning his BS and MS in Horticulture, he came to the Department of Horticultural Science at NC State University as an Instructor. He spent 34 years teaching and advising over 20,000 students. Bryce retired in 2014, but still teaches part-time in the department. For 11 seasons he hosted and produced a three-time, Emmy winning, UNC TV public television show called “In the Garden With Bryce Lane”. He now spends his time giving horticulture talks, doing leadership, and communication training, teaching part-time at NC State, and training NC extension agents in video production. Bryce also teaches numerous classes at the JC Raulston Arboretum. He also hosts a gardening podcast offered by a local NC Garden Center. An avid gardener, Bryce has gardened on the same one quarter acre plot for 37 years.

Mark Weathington
Director
JC Raulston Arboretum

Mark Weathington is the director of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University where he is passionate in his work to connect people with plants. His latest book, Gardening in the South: The Complete Homeowner’s Guide, takes his common sense approach and a bit of humor and makes gardening accessible for any level of gardener.

Mark travels extensively searching for new plants to diversify the American landscape and lecturing on a variety of topics in horticulture to further the JC Raulston Arboretum's vision of "Planning and Planting a Better World." His explorations and speaking engagements have taken him to China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Ecuador, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and throughout the United States.

Advance registration is required. Please register online using our registration e-store. Registration is limited and is considered complete when online registration is completed. Registration is only needed for those that wish to join the live virtual event. Please do not register if you only plan on watching the YouTube videos at a later date. Please register by 5:00 pm on Friday, September 18 to allow enough time for your registration to be processed in time to receive the instructions to join us online.
