Kim Shearer, Tree and Shrub Breeder and Manager New Plant Development Program, The Morton Arboretum

Populating the streets and parkways of cities and suburban communities across the country are elm trees with names like Accolade and Triumph. Such names suggest a recognition of achievement after a long fought war—in this case a war with a plant pathogen. In this talk, the background and history of elm improvement at Morton Arboretum will introduce you to a dendrologist turned breeder and the collection of trees he amassed to establish a legacy of elm improvement that continues to inspire breeding and selection of elms at the Morton Arboretum today.

About Kim Shearer

Kim Shearer is the tree and shrub breeder and manager of new plant development at Morton Arboretum located in the suburbs west of Chicago, Illinois. Kim has the pleasure of working closely with regional and national nursery industry professionals, public garden colleagues, and academic researchers in the selection, development, evaluation, and introduction of new plants. As the manager of new plant development, Kim works directly with the Ornamental Growers Association of Northern Illinois and manages woody plant introductions for Chicagoland Grows. Kim also happens to be an alumna of the NC State Department of Horticulture where she earned her B.S. in horticulture science and got her first taste of the diversity and potential of woody landscape plants at the JC Raulston Arboretum.
