"Permeable Pavement"

This presentation explains the benefits of using permeable pavements and when and how they can be used in North Carolina. It covers the Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers (PICP) as well as new Clay Brick Permeable Pavers and how they are a part of Low Impact Development (LID). The first part of the presentation explains the benefits of permeable pavers and how they reduce storm water run-off and increase ground water recharge. Fred goes through the research performed at NC State University, the history of the acceptance by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality (NCDWQ), and the approval as a Best Management Practice (BMP). Also covered is information about U.S. Green Building Council (USGC) green building rating system Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and how permeable pavements can help contribute points to sustainable projects by reducing storm water, heat island effect, recycled materials, etc. The second half of the presentation goes through the construction process and methods used to build the Permeable Pavement Systems, you will get design ideas and details and specifications. Samples of the pavers will be on hand to touch and feel as well as the different sizes of aggregate used to construct the cross section.
The presentation is approved by the North Carolina American Society of Landscape Architects Licensing Board (NCASLA) and receives a one hour CEU. The presentation also receives continuing education from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) provided through the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI). It is a generic presentation about permeable pavers and does not favor any one manufacturer it centers on the system itself.
