Join one of today's top leaders in landscape design Julie Moir Messervy, as she removes traditional design barriers between the home and its surroundings to produce a unified, personalized design – the landscape of home. As featured in her new book, Outside the Not So Big House: Creating the Landscape of Home, written with architect Sarah Susanka, this groundbreaking approach helps professionals and homeowners explore ways to embrace the habitat of home, discover their inward garden and link inside to out.

Millions of homeowners have embraced Sarah Susanka's groundbreaking "Not So Big" approach to home design. Having carefully conceived and crafted their smaller homes, they now seek to develop what happens around the house using not so big principles and concepts. In this all-day seminar, Julie explains how and why good design works so that we may better attune our properties to fit our needs and our longing for beauty and meaning.

10:00 AM to 12:15 PM – Learning Your Own Landscape of Home
Using slide lectures, exercises, and her Gardener's Personality Test, Julie will help you identify your particular gardening style, your unique needs and spatial longings. She will also discuss how site influences your landscape design, offering tips on such practical details as dealing with slopes, views, and orientation.

12:15 PM to 1:15 PM – Lunch (boxed lunch provided)

1:15 PM to 3:45 PM – Designing Your Own Landscape of Home
Using slide lectures and exercises, Julie will take you through a process to formulate a design for your own landscape. She will provide tips on getting to an "inspired idea" or theme and discuss ways to bring outside in and inside out. Showing her own and others' home designs, she will illustrate practical solutions to design issues, with a focus on compositional principles and patterns.

Landscape Designer Julie Moir Messervy, author of The Inward Garden and Contemplative Gardens, is the principal of Julie Moir Messervy and Associates of Saxtons River, Vermont. Recipient of the American Horticultural Society's 2005 Great American Gardeners Award for Landscape Design, she is designer of the Toronto Music Garden, created in collaboration with eminent cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Her new book, Outside the Not So Big House: Creating the Landscape of Home (Taunton Press) is available for signing after the program.
