New This Summer—Garden Chefs at Home

Spark healthy eating habits in your campers this summer with this online camp that will show them how to grow their own vegetables and use them in their cooking!

Ms. Ashley, our camp instructor and Ms. Elizabeth, our children's program coordinator are excited to keep your campers connected with the gardens and continue the camp fun into this summer for your families. Campers will still participate in activities to help them start and tend to their own vegetable garden as well as learn cooking skills.

Each day, campers will receive 2-3 hours of activities to do at their own pace from the comfort of their home. A virtual face to face camp Lunch Bunch will be a time to virtually gather and talk about the day's activities. At each face to face meeting, campers will share what they have done that morning, watch a recipe be prepared, and get a bonus activity for the afternoon to keep the camp fun going.

Sample schedule for a camp day:

9:00 am – 11:30 am: Visit camp web site to view day's activities and complete at camper's own pace.
11:30 am – 12:00 pm: Break time
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Participate in virtual Lunch Bunch with Ms. Ashley, Ms. Elizabeth, and other Garden Chefs campers
Afternoon: Additional activity given during Lunch Bunch to be completed at camper's own pace (20-30 minute activity).

Activities have been developed to be as self-guided as possible for the campers. Parents are asked to be "Phone On" or "Eyes On" for most of the activities as the camp activities do not assume any supervision of the campers. If your camper wants to cook along with the lunch recipe, we ask that parents are "Hands On" to help supervise knives and other kitchen utensils.

Included in the registration fee is a "camp bucket" filled with materials needed for the camp activities. These buckets will be available for pickup at the JC Raulston Arboretum prior to camp at a designated time. Also included will be an ingredient list that we suggest having available for recipes but not necessary for the camp experience.

Camp families will receive an e-mail the week prior to camp with a link to the camp web site where activities will be available. Live sessions will be held on Zoom and links will be made available on the camp web site.
