Moonlight in the Garden
Moonlight in the Garden
By Arlene Calhoun, Assistant Director

Member Preview Night - RSPV Requested by Monday, October 31

The days are getting shorter and the evenings a little cooler. A perfect combination for a evening stroll through your favorite garden. For those of you planning to join us on the Member Preview Night, November 4, please advance register you and your guests at Moonlight in the Garden tickets. We'll be giving Catering Works a head count on Monday, October 31. Please help us get in right.

John Garner and his team at Southern Lights have most of the fixtures installed. I asked John how many earlier this week and he's lost count. He explained nearly every time he's in the garden making his evening adjustments he adds a few more - 20 one night, 30 another. We're guessing it's close to 500! He warns me, landscape lighting is addictive. And I'm starting to see how.

I took a stroll last Thursday evening and couldn't believe my eyes. By day our garden is lovely. The collection creatively planted adding to the form and texture we've all come to love. By night the garden is magical. The light, the shadows, the colors, all take a different form under the cover of darkness. It is enchanting and we're excited to share it with our great friends who share our love for the art of horticulture.

See the garden in different light. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of hot cider and scrumptious hors d'oeuvres. Tap your foot to the live music of Mebanesville and roast marshmallows over an open fire. See you there.

Volunteers Prepare Sand-filled Containers That Will Be Placed Inside the Luminarias
By Kathryn Wall, Membership and Volunteer Coordinator

The JCRA's upcoming Moonlight in the Garden promises to be a night to remember - several nights actually! Each magical evening in the garden requires many tasks. Dozens of volunteers are needed to enhance the fun for everyone turning out for a crisp evening stroll.

We've expanded outside our usual core of volunteers and are still seeking help, especially for Sunday, November 6 and the following weekend, Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Work is eligible for community service hours for schools. Shifts run from two to four hours.

For more information, contact Kathryn Wall, membership and volunteer coordinator, at (919) 513-7004 or kathryn_wall@ncsu.edu.
Lake Como
Gardens, Wine, Art, Food, and Markets-Italy, Monaco, and France

Thursday, June 22 through Monday, July 3, 2017

Join the JC Raulston Arboretum and a jolly band of food, wine, and garden lovers on an in-depth exploration of the Italian Lake District, Monaco, the Italian and French Rivieras, and Provence.

Your garden adventure is set to commence on the shores of Lake Como where you will stroll through stunning gardens and charming lakeside towns with breathtaking views. Our garden adventure continues as we head south toward Menton on the French Riviera. We'll explore some of the planet's most beautiful gardens and visit the botanical gardens of Monaco. We then make our way to Arles, one of Van Gogh's homes in Provence, and a charming town full of great restaurants and Roman archeological treasures. It was here that Van Gogh painted his famous café scenes and lived with Paul Gaugin in the Studio of the South. The hill towns beckon, so we've planned excursions into the countryside to soak up the sunny ambiance and one of the famed Provençal open-air markets. We'll end our journey in Nice on the Côte d'Azur. Join the JC Raulston Arboretum and savor all that Provence, the Riviera, Monaco, and Lake Como have to offer: wine tastings, world-class art, Roman ruins, lush gardens, and Provençal markets are all included.

Hands-on instruction will be provided and all participants will learn to make and will create a wreath of their own to take home. All materials needed for this workshop will be provided including a vast assortment of greens from the JC Raulston Arboretum's horticultural collections for your wreath, however, participants are encouraged to bring items for their wreaths or to share. Please bring garden shears.

Wine and Wreaths

Celebrate the season with some hors d'oeuvres and wine while making your wreath in the 7:00 PM workshop.

All three workshops (1:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 7:00 PM) will have the same amount and kinds greenery. There's no need to worry about us running out in the latter workshops since we'll divide the supplies into thirds and restock before each workshop. Two wreath sizes are available. The smaller wreath is ideal for doors while the larger wreath is ideal for large doors, fences, and walls. Space is limited so register today.
