"London—Plus Gardens!"

Do you want to visit London with no hassle of planning the whole trip yourself? Do you have an interest in visiting some of London's premier gardens with an experienced horticulturists and a really fun group of plant enthusiasts? Would you like a very personal tour of the private home garden of one of England's most noted plantsman—Roy Lancaster? Then this tour is for you!

Elaine Smith of E-destinations has put together a great excursion package and really great airline and hotel rates for this tour. As you know, airline rates have skyrocketed, (no pun intended) plus June is the height of the season for the United Kingdom. We are so pleased that E-destinations managed to keep the price under $3,500 and still provide us with a first-class hotel, plus great amenities, and tours.

Saturday, June 11

6:15 PM – Depart RDU (American Airline flight 174)

Sunday, June 12

6:55 AM – Arrive London Heathrow International Airport; Meet escort outside of customs area; transferred to Radisson Edwardian Hotel, located minutes from the airport, for use of the hotel spa and gym to freshen up, then a continental buffet breakfast at the hotel.

10:00 AM – Depart hotel for transfer to London which includes a two-hour orientation tour of the city.

1:00 PM – Arrive at the hotel (a first-class hotel in an ideal London location for shopping and sightseeing) and check-in.

Unpack, (only once for the entire excursion) then relax!

3:30 PM ‒ Afternoon tea at the hotel with the group. Enjoy freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, delicious finger sandwiches, season fruit tartlets and pastries, and a selection of teas... yummm!

Dinner on your own; overnight at hotel. (Note: There are a number of good restaurants close to the hotel, plus there is a great little market very near the hotel for people who just want a light snack for dinner. More details on choices and dinner options will be given to participants in the orientation packets.)

Monday, June 13

Full English breakfast at hotel

9:00 AM ‒ Meet the coach driver in front of the hotel and depart for a full day to include a tour and visit with Roy and Sue Lancaster. (Noted English horticulturist, writer, and broadcaster, Roy Lancaster, along with his wife Sue, will host an exclusive private tour of their home garden. Roy will then lead an afternoon tour of Hillier Nursery, established in 1864. Friends may remember that Roy was our keynote speaker at the 2006 JCRA 30th Anniversary Symposium, and Roy's presentation featured his personal garden. You will see their garden up close during the height of England's gardening season!)

6:00 PM ‒ Return to hotel; dinner on your own; overnight at hotel

Tuesday, June 14

Full English breakfast at hotel

9:00 AM ‒ Depart as a group (optional) for Kew Gardens, via London's Tube using the Oyster card. (Each participant will receive an Oyster card with 20 GBP already "loaded" on the card. This can be used anytime for any of London's public transportation options. More money can be added to the card at any time.)

9:30 AM ‒ Arrive at station for Kew Gardens and enjoy a lovely short stroll to Kew's entrance. Garden entrance fee is included. (After a brief welcome and orientation, participants can explore on their own or "hang-out" with Mark Weathington. This is a fabulous garden with tons to see. However, with your Oyster card, you can spend as long or a little time as you wish in the garden.)

Lunch on your own. (There are several nice cafés at Kew and in the neighborhood near the Kew Tube stop.)

Dinner on your own; overnight at hotel

Wednesday, June 15

Full English breakfast at hotel

Full day of leisure to explore the city on your own (suggestions will be provided in your orientation package, plus TBD small group garden and museum tours will be led by JC Raulston Arboretum staff for any interested participants—such as a walk to the excellent garden at London's Science Museum or a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Queen's Gallery; West End Theatre, etc.)

Thursday, June 16

Full English breakfast at hotel

9:00 AM ‒ Meet the coach driver in front of the hotel and depart for a full-day tour to include entrance to Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley. (After a brief welcome and orientation, participants can explore on their own or "hang-out" with Mark Weathington. We hope to visit the trial areas where Denny Werner's new Buddleja cultivars have been a smash hit for the last four years!)

Lunch on your own (nice café in the garden).

2:00 PM ‒ Surprise private garden tour(s) in charming nearby Reigate, Surrey

6:00 PM ‒ Return to hotel; dinner on your own; overnight at hotel

Note: The three "leisure" days will include various small group tours that will be based on participant interests. There will be a number of small gardens to visit led by Mark Weathington, plus other options for guests wishing to visit London's fantastic museums, shopping, and theater—just to name a few! Participants are encouraged to send suggestions and ideas for these "leisure" days. This trip is designed to be fun, flexible, educational, and something for all to enjoy!
