Friends of the Arboretum Lecture
"The Macaronesian Flora and a (Slight) Charles Darwin Connection"

The Macaronesian Floristic Province includes an array of volcanic islands known to us as the Azores, Madeira, Selvagems, Canaries, and Cape Verdes situated in the North Atlantic Ocean between 15° and 40° N. These islands are of interest to botanists for their floral diversity and its evolutionary history. Although visited by few North Americans, these islands present a wealth of interest to anyone interested in plants. Here one can see the remnants of the subtropical forest known as the Laurisilva, which covered the entire Mediterranean basin 20 million years ago. The retreat of this forest to these scattered islands is the result of climatic changes over the last 10,000 years.
During this lecture we will travel through some of the places where these forest remnants can still be seen and learn a bit about how people have impacted this ancient flora.
