Espalier Workshop
"The Art of Espalier"

Lee Calhoun, a resident of Pittsboro, North Carolina, developed a passion for collecting and preserving antique southern apple varieties. His living collection includes over two hundred varieties, all grown in his backyard. To accommodate this impressive collection, Lee propagated all varieties on dwarfing apple rootstock, and established them on a trellis system using the techniques of espalier. Lee will share with participants the history of his impressive collection, and describe and demonstrate the various espalier training forms he has used. Although Lee's expertise is in using the art of espalier for maintaining his apple variety collection, the concepts, principles, and techniques that he will share are applicable to espalier of many woody ornamental plants. The seasonal timing of this workshop will correspond to the time of full bloom for much of his collection, so expect to revel in the beauty of this remarkable collection in flower.
We expect high interest in this event, so please register early. This workshop limited to fifteen individuals. If demand exceeds space available, a waiting list will be maintained. Participants will meet at the JCRA, and travel as a group to Lee Calhoun's residence for the workshop.
