JC Raulston Arboretum e-Update - April 2016

Director's Note
By Mark Weathington, Director
What a glorious spring it has been! I can't remember a better season for the magnolias, redbuds, peonies, and all the rest of the spring flowering trees and shrubs than we have been experiencing this year. It has truly been a magical experience wandering through the Arboretum grounds this year. If you haven't been out, I strongly encourage you to visit and see it for yourself. Plenty of people did come out for Raulston Blooms! We had nearly twice as many birdhouses entered in the completion and, despite the morning rain, attendance was way up for the event. We'd like to especially thank Triangle Gardener and the The News & Observer for sponsoring the birdhouse competition and WPTF and Rufus Edmisten for bringing the Weekend Gardener program out to broadcast on-site.
I hope to see many of you here again for our Gala in the Garden, North Carolina's premiere garden party, on May 1. We're switching things up a bit this year and will have mobile bidding from either your smart phone or from iPads operated by our dedicated volunteers. Hopefully, this will allow for more socializing during the event even for our most avid bidders. We've really upped the ante this year with our items and will be offering some phenomenal rare plants along with extravagant experiences like a luxurious spa package at the Umstead Hotel and Spa or a chef's table dinner in the kitchen of the Angus Barn. Have a wonderful spring!
Gala registration is closed, but walk-in registrations are welcome on Sunday.

End of Semester Update on Our Conversion to Geospatial Mapping
By Valerie Tyson, Plant Recorder
Alicia Leftwick and Phil Pegelow, Master's students in NC State University's Center for Geospatial Analysis, made great progress this semester toward our conversion to a new mapping system. They completed the following:
- Two very cool features will be ready for our visitors to use once we convert:
- What plants are within 20' of me?
- Show me a route to this plant.
- A new database and programs to convert our data are ready. This may not sound exciting to some, but it's the much needed first step we need to move forward with this project.
We still need to make more headway into synchronizing the new database with our inventory database before we can actually convert to the new system, but there is another semester on the horizon!
We so appreciate those of you who stepped up and helped us acquire new computers with the strength to stand up to this workload, and of course the many volunteers through the years that have meticulously kept our database clean and useful for the benefit of all. Our hats are off.

Day Tripping to Meredith Arboretum and Gardens at Meredith College
By Cheryl Kearns, Volunteer and Board Member
Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - 9:45 AM-11:00 AM
The campus at Meredith College, like any other public garden setting, has been changing and evolving to adapt to the needs of the student body while offering an alluring and diverse plant material to visitors. One of the newest features is the Community Garden, and Aaron Schettler has added an array of perennials, shrubs, and trees that make the campus appealing in any season. There is an excellent collection of magnolias purchased and planted in the past few years, thanks to a grant from "Miss Ruby" McSwain. Part of the campus is outlined by the Greenway which is itself bordered with flowering trees and shrubs. Join us on this tour as we discover the beauty of Meredith College. Aaron Schettler, Meredith College's head groundskeeper, will guide us on our tour. For more information, please contact Chris Glenn at (919) 513-7005 or chris_glenn@ncsu.edu.
